Chelsea End Pre-Season With Draw

LONDON: Chelsea ended a disappointing pre-season with a 1-1 draw against Inter Milan at Stamford Bridge.

Enzo Maresca’s squad finished the campaign with three defeats in six matches and Lesley Ugochukwu’s late goal saved Chelsea from another defeat.

The Italian manager fielded his best squad against the Serie A champions ahead of the opening match of the English Premier League next weekend.

Cole Palmer, who was given additional leave after reaching the Euro 2024 final with England, was named for the first time along with Marc Cucurella and Nicholas Jackson.

Chelsea fell behind after 26 minutes thanks to Marcus Thuram’s goal from outside the penalty box.

Maresca’s men controlled the game and had several attempts but none were able to threaten Inter’s goal.

After the break, the home fans were introduced to new player, Pedro Neto, whose transfer from Wolves had just been confirmed.

Christopher Nkunku’s attempt was saved by Yan Sommer in the second half and the post denied Levi Colwill’s shot.

The Blues secured a draw in the final moments thanks to Ugochukwu’s solid shot after Inter failed to clear a corner kick.

Chelsea have only won once throughout the pre-season campaign, with a 3-0 victory over Mexican club Club America.

They lost to Real Madrid, Manchester City and Celtic, as well as drawing in the United States against League One club Wrexham.

Chelsea will begin their league campaign against defending champions, Manchester City this Sunday.

Mbappe Leaves PSG With Full Of Pride

LILLE, France: Kylian Mbappe said he left Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) ‘full of pride’ after winning the French Cup final earlier this morning, but said he would wait for the right time to decide where he will play next season.

“To end up with a trophy in the final, there is no better way. It feels too good,” Mbappe told reporters after PSG beat Lyon 2-1 in the final in the northern city of Lille.

Mbappe’s contract has now expired and he recently confirmed he will leave the club at the end of the season, with Real Madrid expected to be his next destination, although he or the Spanish giants have yet to make any announcements.

“What I want is to finish well with my club, with a trophy. I think there is time for everything and I will announce my future club at the most suitable time,” he said.

“I think it will be no problem in a few days.

“I don’t know yet. There are still some details (to be resolved) but the most important thing is that everything ended brilliantly here,” explained Mbappe, who will join the French squad to face Euro 2024.

Mbappe didn’t score in this morning’s opening game so he leaves his hometown club with a club record of 256 goals in 308 appearances.

Ousmane Dembele and Fabian Ruiz scored for PSG, who held on for victory after Ireland’s Jake O’Brien pulled one back for Lyon in the second half.

Luis Enrique’s side, who lost to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League semi-finals, finished the campaign with a league and cup double.

Mbappe joined PSG from Monaco in August 2017 in a deal worth 180 million euros and leaves the club having won six Ligue 1 championships, four French Cups and two League Cups, as well as helping his team reach the Champions League final in 2020.
